Where to get books while traveling?
« on: January 14, 2019, 08:13:52 AM »
Hi all, first time poster here.  I wanted to ask where everyone gets their books while traveling?  My family and I (wife and two kids) are currently planning on heading abroad this summer.  We're big users of the local library here, and I routinely get ebooks from the library.  We can renew our library membership before we leave, so we'll still have access to the local library ebooks for a year, but after that expires, I'm not sure of the best place to get ebooks.  I already checked with the library, and we have to renew our membership every year in person.  Since we don't have any plans on coming back for a while, it will be difficult to renew in person.

I thought about getting a Kindle Unlimited membership, but I'm not a fan of their selection.  Does anyone have any other alternatives rather than just buying ebooks outright?

Thanks in advance!

I would say it depends a lot on where you're going and how long you're staying. If you are moving abroad long term and staying in the same location maybe you can get a local library membership. If you're going to be moving a lot that might complicate things. There's a lot of free books on archive.org though of course these have to be public domain so it's mostly just going to be old books, but if you haven't read all the classics yet it might be worth doing that while you don't have other options. Another option although it isn't ebooks is purchasing used books locally and selling them for a similar amount recouping the cost some/completely. There are also website that will show you which kindle books are free that day or track prices.

Yeah I should've been clearer.  We'll be moving around a lot, not staying in any location for longer than a few months.  I'll check out the websites that track prices for kindle books.  It may be worth it to catch a few of them on sale if it's something that both my wife and I will want to read.  Thanks!

a friend or family member may be happy to borrow ebooks from the library for you
