Somewhere I read (GCC or another blog?) that most of a recovery after a major downturn in various recessions happened in just 8 days or so. If you weren't invested in the market at that point, you missed the big rise. I can't seem to find the original article or the math that backs this up. Does anyone know about this? I'd really like to find the article. Sorry if I am being vague, but at the time I just skimmed the article. Thanks, Ann

Taxes / Short Term Capital Gains Tax

I've been doing some day trading (more like week or month trading), but still falls under the short term capital gains tax. Besides doing this trading in a Roth (which is rather small and so limits my ability to trade), is there another way to avoid the taxes? I've been doing very well recently, and I don't mind contributing to roads, education, etc, but I would like to explore ways of keeping a little more. Currently, being taxed at 32% federal. Thanks for ideas!

Glad to hear all is well. We are a little in shock over the changes in our life - schools closed, festivals cancelled (New Orleans has at least one festival every week - we know how to enjoy life here), no large gatherings, etc. Louisiana seems to have a larger percentage per capita of Co - Vid 19 cases (perhaps all the festivals?), but we are no stranger to pulling together in times of crisis - Hurricane Katrina, etc. People are organizing to help those who need to stay shut in - so younger people are making grocery/medicine runs, helping in whatever way we see a need.

I am worried about many of my artist friends and tourism/restaurant workers who live paycheck to paycheck. To even miss one paycheck is terrible, but to miss a month or more is going to be incapacitating.

This experience is really exposing to the more complacent among us how dependent we all are on one another and how we truly need to make some changes in how we handle sick pay, etc.

Expat life / Obtaining long term medicine overseas

Hi,

I am retiring this summer and plan on backpacking through South America for a year. Yay!

However, I take medications every day. In the US, I can get a refill every 3 months. How does this work out of the country? I'd hate to go see a Dr in whatever place I am at to get a new prescription every time I need a refill. I don't think a prescription written by my Dr will work out of the USA.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
